The former Blue Building® Office and Laboratory in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

- Completed in 2014 -

Besides being officially registered as a Sharjah Airport International Free Zone company, in 2014, with a special license of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Blue Building Holding and Blue Building Foundation (FZE) have completed the construction of their office in Sharjah, Al Atain.

Until 2020, this office building has served as a model building for the Blue Building Concept, as it has implemented its concept with healthy and recyclable materials, unique cooling techniques with airtight construction and super insulation. This will lead to new standards of energy conservation superior to those known from passive-house buildings. To achieve the goal, a thermal simulation was developed that allows calculation of the required energy flows and the cooling capacity to be installed.

However, there was something very “special” about the Sharjah Office and Laboratory Building

In a closed room, one person can raise the CO2 level to 1000 ppm within 45 minutes. According to Max von Pettenkoffer, this is the maximum amount for a healthy living.

The Blue Building controlled air circulation has demonstrated an increase in employee performance. Due to the carefully calculated ventilation rate, the Blue Building Foundation has had only two absences due to illness (3-4 days each) in six years with ten employees.

The Blue Air Purification System has run from 2014-2020 (until relocation to Scotland) in the Blue Building office in Sharjah without any problems. When this laboratory and office was built in 2014, no one expected the following result: the stationary controlled air circulation system installed in the building was not only able to remove bacteria and pollen from the air. In addition, it also eliminated most viruses (99.995%). In addition, this system was able to reduce CO2 levels in the building by up to 47%; a result that is unique in the world. Values of 221 ppm carbon dioxide were measured on average, while outdoors in Sharjah values of 415 ppm carbon dioxide were measured on that day. From 2014 to 2020, air quality measurements were taken around the clock; the lowest CO2 level achieved indoors was 219 ppm carbon dioxide.

To cool down the rooms, water pipes are installed in the ceiling. This system of quiet cooling is much healthier than the vents of the normal coolers. This system is working with radiation. A pleasant room temperature is achieved without draught; it is silent, healthy, clean and without any allergen burdens.

The incoming outdoor is being cooled down and cleaned from pollutants and dust particles; the used air inside the house will be exhausted. The controlled air circulation system is increasing the rate of oxygen and decrease the rate of CO2. With the Blue Building Cooling System, we have in average a relative humidity of 50%; the system is silent with a controllable temperature.

At the same time, CO2 levels of 414 ppm were measured outside.
